As health concerns and healthcare systems around the world continue to evolve, there’s a rise in demand for those specialising in global public health sectors.

Are you interested in the well-being of local and international communities? Do you want to contribute to developing equal access to quality health services for all? Workers in public health focus on fulfilling these needs.

Complete our Global Public Health online course, which is offered in partnership with the University of Richmond and UNC Charlotte, to learn how to analyse the factors involved in global health issues and solutions, and gain the theoretical and practical skills needed to make a positive contribution to increasing the accessibility and quality of health services for people worldwide.

Through this public health online course, with its live lectures, real-life case studies, and assigned activities, you’ll learn about sustainable approaches to global health challenges. These challenges include: both infectious and non-transferable diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, environmental impact on health, maternal health, mental health and natural disasters. You will also look at real-life examples of global health issues from different contexts, as well as touch on some of the current debates in the field.

Skills you’ll acquire

After completing this course you’ll be able to:

  • review the global disease challenges and contextual influences affecting the health of nations
  • analyse the health system factors that affect the delivery of healthcare to people, especially in Africa and Asia
  • discuss the complexity of decision-making in global public health
  • design your own innovative solution to a pressing global health problem
  • outline different careers in global health that you could pursue.

Is this course for you?

This course is for anyone with a passion for the health and well-being of people and communities around the world. This includes high school, college and graduate students looking to gain an introduction into global public health. Mid-level professionals and retired seniors who are interested in global public health are also welcome to join.

Course Curriculum

Learn about the history of global public health. You’ll begin by learning about the cultural, economic, environmental, governmental and social influences involved in local and international healthcare.

Through analysis of historic and existing global health issues, you’ll learn to identify root causes and effective solutions. You’ll explore strategies for health education, health system management, patient care and engagement, preventive health and treatment of infectious and non-transferable diseases.

Following this, you’ll gain an understanding of finance in health, exploring the roles and relationships of stakeholders in politics and the economy. Learn the components of universal health coverage (UHC) including accessibility, affordability and quality. You’ll also discuss the objectives and targets of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) 3: Health and Well-Being.

You’ll then analyse different approaches to maternal health, mental health, nutrition and preventative health. Pull from resources provided by recognised public health organisations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

After successfully completing this course, you’ll have the foundational knowledge to consider contributing towards global public health initiatives.
